This summer, be sure to read and enjoy a good book, keep those math facts sharp, and have fun! Be sure to stop by and visit next year. I hope you and your family have a GREAT, SAFE summer vacation!
The finish line is in sight!
We will begin the final week with the 5th Grade Field Day. We will be walking to the High School track where students will get to participate in several field events. Be sure to dress comfortably and wear good walking shoes (note: students may get wet). Students may bring money to purchase ice cream from the ice cream truck while at the field day event. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Wednesday.
In math, we will be working on some logic puzzles and games as we end the year together. Students will also be turning in their textbooks on Tuesday. Please make sure all books are at school that day.

This week during iTime, student groups came up with long lists of words that came to mind as they reflected on the year in math. I compiled all of the lists into a Wordle and this is how our thinking is represented:
The students are ready for the MAP test next week! We will begin on Tuesday with Math. I encourage all students to slow down in order to do their best thinking. They have all of the tools they need in their “math toolbox”. They should work out all problems carefully and check their work. I know that they will do GREAT!

This past week was a busy week in math! Students completed many hands-on activities as we explored quadrilaterals, combining/subdividing polygons, geometric transformations, and rotational symmetry.
We will begin next week with a look at 3-dimensional solid figures. This will include investigations into polyhedron (solid figures with flat faces that are polygons including types of pyramids and prisms) along with non-polyhedron (solids with curved surfaces that include cylinders, cones, and spheres). This will include a look at nets (the patterns used to create 3D solids). Students will begin an ongoing activity involving the nets on Tuesday. The activity will be worth 30 points, but extra work can be done to earn up to 40 points (10 points extra credit). Be sure to ask your child about this extra credit opportunity.
