This week in math,we review work with multiplication as we begin the process of working with multiplying larger decimals. During this time,we will also begin timed division tests. These tests will not initially count toward their overall grade. However,students should continue working on their multiplication and division facts, as there will be one test during the month of May that will count as a grade.

First of all,congratulations to all of the students on the Red Team! Everyone worked very hard on the MAP Test this past week. We are all very proud of your efforts!

The countdown to MAP testing has nearly come to an end. After a wonderful kickoff assembly with DGB on Friday, students will start this week with a review on Monday, with testing beginning on Tuesday. In addition to Math and Communication Arts, 5th grade students are tested in the area of Science. Students are tested nearly all day in their homeroom (with breaks,of course). Please avoid scheduling appointments on testing days,if possible. The following is the 5th grade testing schedule:

Tuesday, April 17 –Mathematics
Wednesday, April 28 –Communication Arts
Thursday, April 19 –Science

Please encourage your child to get a good night’s rest and eat a good breakfast in the morning. They should take their time so that they may do their personal best. I know that they will do GREAT!

Friday News – 03/30

We will begin next week working with area of 2-dimensional objects. This will be followed with work with 3-dimensional solids. Our work with 3D solids will also include constructing and identifying geometric nets (the patterns used to construct solids).

A special activity will be given on Wednesday of this week and will be due the following week. Students will have an opportunity to earn up to 10 points in extra credit. Please talk with your child about this project beginning Wednesday. It is the only opportunity for extra credit this quarter.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! I hope you are rested and rejuvenated for a big week of learning!

We will begin our geometry unit by taking a look at lines, line segments, and rays this week. This will be followed by a look at polygons. A special emphasis will be on our 4-sided friends, the quadrilaterals. It should be a busy week!

Wow! We have had a busy week of learning! We have had several new math laws discovered by the students. These student discoveries have helped form laws for comparing and ordering fractions, simplifying fractions, adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators, changing an improper fraction to a mixed number, and changing a mixed number to an improper fraction.

We will begin the week with a continued look at adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. A study guide will be given on Tuesday, with a test scheduled on Thursday.

As mentioned throughout the year, March marks the beginning of when timed multiplication tests may be taken periodically for a grade. Students have discovered that knowledge and use of these facts is popping up in other math topics. Please continue to work on these important facts with your child.

We will begin next week by finding the LCD (Least Common Denominator) when comparing fractions. This will be followed by learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will end the week by adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlinke denominators.
