Our Motto I am a Champion! Courageous enough to begin. Determined enough to continue. Powerful enough to succeed! | Can you solve equations like this? 8 + 2x + 3 – x = 2x + 1 or 2(2x + 3) = x + 9 Well, the Red Team can! Students recently completed a test on Hands-On Equations. I am pleased to announce that out of 78 students on our team, 59 students received an A! Red Team members proved that they could perform tough algebraic equations and passed the test with high scores! Way to go,Red Team! This week, we completed our unit of Hands-on Algebra. Students will receive a study guide on Monday. As always, students will receive 2 bonus points for returning the study guide with a parent signature by test day. This week, students worked with rounding whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place. This would be a good skill to periodically work on with your child. We will begin next week by continuing to review addition and subtraction skills. In particular,we will work with adding and subtracting decimals. While this is very similar to working with whole numbers, students are reminded to create equivalent decimals whenever possible to help line up their columns and decimal points. Because this is a review of previous skill ,it looks like we should be ready for another test by the end of the week. Look for a study guide to go home around Wednesday of next week. Upcoming Events October 7 –Math Test (tentative) - October 8 – Sunshine Run (7:30 a.m.)

Conferences will be held with the homeroom teacher at the end of October. As the cold and flu season approaches,if you are able and willing to donate hand sanitizer,we would appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help. Have a GREAT weekend! We will begin next week with a review of decimals. We have made mathematical models and practiced writing decimals in standard, expanded, and word form,as well as comparing and ordering decimals. Students will help create a study guide on Tuesday. We will review using stations and games the rest of the week with a test scheduled on Thursday. As always, students will have the opportunity to earn bonus points by returning the study guide with a parent signature by test day. Upcoming Events Special Class Days for Next Week M - Day 2 T - Day 3 W - Day 4 R - Day 1 F - OFF Homeroom Reminder Congratulations to Brooke! She was elected our homeroom Student Council Representative. A special thank you to all of the students who were willing to serve our homeroom: Krystalynn,Alison, and Mikalah. Thank you to everyone who has donated items for our classroom (highlighters, colored pencils,glue,cardstock,etc.). Your generosity is appreciated! Library: Overdue library books will be fined at WIS. Please be aware of the due dates for books checked out by your child. Thursday Notes: Students will receive a Thursday Note every Thursday. Please have them signed and returned by the following day. Have a great weekend! We are off to an AWESOME start on the Red Team! Students have eagerly settled in to life at WIS as they have chosen lockers, switched classes, and made new friends. In math,we have begun the year by examining place value of whole numbers. Students have reviewed writing numbers to the thousands period using standard form (using digits),word form, and expanded form by breaking the number apart using the values of the digits (ex. 456,329 = 400,000 + 50,000 + 6,000 + 300 + 20 + 9). We extended this review of 4th grade skills by looking at numbers in the millions and billions periods. You can help your child by having them compose and decompose various numbers to the millions period. Recognizing the patterns of place value can help aid in success. HB TB B , HM TM M , HTh TTh Th , H T O We will begin the week by continuing our look at at place value as we compare and order greater numbers. We will also take a look at benchmark numbers as a way to make reasonable estimates. We will be scheduled to complete a study guide on Friday with our first test tentatively scheduled for Wednesday of next week (September 7th). Students have also begun taking timed multiplication tests. These daily tests consist of 68 problems to solve in 2:30 minutes. It is important to note that these tests are NOT for a grade. We will be making personal goals and tracking our own results using a line graph. The purpose of these tests is to increase fluency with the basic multiplication facts. This will be extremely important when we begin working on multiplication and division later this year. While the tests will not count toward your child’s grade, there will be a time in March and April where some scores may be reflected on your child’s overall grade, however, this is much later in the school year. You can find several sites to work on these important facts in the “Math Links” section located at the top of the blog page. Upcoming Events - Monday – Students are dismissed at 3:00 every Monday
- August 31 –Running Club Begins (forms located outside the counselor’s office)
- September 5 –Labor Day (NO SCHOOL)
- September 7 –Math Test
- September 9 – Picture Day

We have been working on many review items over the last week, including work with multiplication and division. Some students have found out the hard way, that although summer is just around the corner,it is still important for them to take their time and do their best work. This week,we will continue our work with our group projects –“common craft”videos. Student groups have chosen a mathematical topic to illustrate by coming up with a problem and showing how to use math to solve it. Students have come up with very creative ideas and I look forward to seeing the final products!
