Friday News - 4/9

This week during iTime, student groups came up with long lists of words that came to mind as they reflected on the year in math.  I compiled all of the lists into a Wordle and this is how our thinking is represented:

The students are ready for the MAP test next week!  We will begin on Tuesday with Math.  I encourage all students to slow down in order to do their best thinking.  They have all of the tools they need in their “math toolbox”.  They should work out all problems carefully and check their work.  I know that they will do GREAT!

Friday News - 3/12

This past week was a busy week in math!  Students completed many hands-on activities as we explored quadrilaterals, combining/subdividing polygons, geometric transformations, and rotational symmetry.

We will begin next week with a look at 3-dimensional solid figures.  This will include investigations into polyhedron (solid figures with flat faces that are polygons including types of pyramids and prisms) along with non-polyhedron (solids with curved surfaces that include cylinders, cones, and spheres).  This will include a look at nets (the patterns used to create 3D solids).   Students will begin an ongoing activity involving the nets on Tuesday.  The activity will be worth 30 points, but extra work can be done to earn up to 40 points (10 points extra credit).  Be sure to ask your child about this extra credit opportunity.

Upcoming Events

  • March 14th – Daylight Savings Time Begins
  • March 19th – 3rd Quarter iChoose Assembly
  • March 19th – Early Dismissal (12:30 p.m.)

Friday News – 2/26

While we still have about 7 students that need to take the test, our initial results on  Division with 2-Digit Divisors has been awesome!  Out of 77 students, we have had 63 As or Bs on the test!  Great job, Red Team!

We will now begin a unit on Geometry.  We will work with concepts including 2-D and 3-D objects, area, transformations, lines, angles, symmetry, rotational symmetry, and more.   We will also be incorporating new skills in numbers and operations.  March will be a busy month for the Red Team!

Friday News – 2/19

Students have done well working with 2-digit divisors.  Ironically, most errors that do occur are usually related to subtraction.  Students are reminded to carefully work the problems to help eliminate errors.    We will continue working with division this week, including turning a fraction into a decimal.  A study guide will go home on Tuesday or Wednesday, with a test scheduled for Friday.  As always, students may receive 2 bonus points for returning their study guide with a parent signature by the test date.

Upcoming Events

  • February 26th – Division Test (2-Digit Divisors)
  • March 1st – Students May No Longer Use Multiplication Charts
  • March 19th – Early Dismissal (12:30 p.m.)

Friday News - 2/12

This was a busy week!   The Red Team students began D.A.R.E., watched Coach get his hair shaved (see video on the WIS blog), celebrated Valentine’s Day, and of course, did a whole lot of learning!  In Math, students began an introductory approach to division with 2-digit divisors (see post below).  I am pleased with the results as students seem to understand that the process is very similar.

We are now ready to begin division with 2-digit divisors.  Students will be reminded of their previous work with compatible numbers to help them determine a starting point for division with 2-digit divisors.  They will be encouraged to try, check, and revise their calculations as they perform these problems.  This will be something we will be doing over the next couple of weeks so that students may begin to build confidence in performing these problems.

Upcoming Events

  • February 15th – School IS in session (snow make-up date)
  • February 15th – Mid-Quarter Grade Slips are Due
  • February 17th – D.A.R.E. Letters (parent signature) Due
  • March 1st – Students May No Longer Use Multiplication Charts

Division with 2-Digit Divisors

You might have noticed that as we have begun to learn how to divide using 2-digit divisors, that all of our problems have contained the same divisors (36 or 54).  We have done this so that students could see from the beginning that the process was the same and as a result, have some success.   We created special multiples charts of 36 and 54 to help with this process.  We will begin tackling the full process next week, but first, watch as Jordyn uses the SMART Airliner to demonstrate how to work  2347 ÷ 36.
