First of all, congratulations to all of the students on the Red Team!  Everyone worked very hard on the MAP Test this past week.  We are all very proud of your efforts!

This week in math,we review work with multiplication and division and begin the process of working with larger numbers.  During this time,we will also begin timed division tests.  These tests will not initially count toward their overall grade.  However, students should continue working on their multiplication and division facts,as there will be one test during the month of May that will count as a grade.

Last week,we continued our work with 2-D geometry as we completed several hands-on activities with polygons.  These activities involved working with quadrilaterals, geometric transformations, combining and subdividing polygons, symmetry, and rotational symmetry.

We will begin the week with a continuation of 2-D geometry by looking at area and perimeter.   This will be followed by exploring the properties of geometric solids and 3-Dimensional geometry.

Welcome Back!Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break!  I hope you are rested and rejuvenated for a big week of learning!

We will continue our geometry unit by taking a look at circles and polygons this week.  A special emphasis will be on our 4-sided friends, the quadrilaterals.  We’ll end the week by taking a look at symmetry and rotational symmetry.  It should be a busy week!

Upcoming Events

Our team received a new student shortly before the break.  Red Team welcomes Alyssa to our homeroom.  We’re glad you’re here!

As spring approaches,it is a good time to remind your child of appropriate behavior expectations.  “Spring Fever”sometimes begins early with 5th graders and they may need a friendly reminder.

Have a GREAT week!  :)

Wow!  We have had a busy week of learning!  We have had several new math laws discovered by the students.  These student discoveries have helped form laws for comparing and ordering fractions,adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators, changing an improper fraction to a mixed number, and changing a mixed number to an improper fraction.

We will begin the week with a continued look at adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.  We will then begin a unit on geometry.  This is always a fun unit that students seem to enjoy.  This unit will continue after spring break.

Upcoming Events

  • March 13 – Daylight Savings Time Begins (spring forward)
  • March 15 – 3rd Quarter Grades Issued
  • March 15 – WIS Skating Party (6-8 p.m.)
  • March 17 – WIS Talent Night / Raffle (5:30p.m.)
  • March 18 – Early Dismissal (12:30 p.m.)

Friday News - 03/04Friday News –03/04

We have really done quite well with equivalent fractions!  Students started by using fraction bars to help understand and find equivalencies.  We later moved to using the ”power of the number 1″by multiplying and dividing by 1 whole in a fraction form by making sure the numerator and denominators were the same.

This week,we will continue working with fractions.  We will start the week by reducing fractions to simplest form (or lowest terms).  We will then work with comparing and ordering fractions.  This will be followed by adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators,as well as,working with mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Upcoming Events

  • March 4 – Spring Fundraiser Begins
  • March 11 –End of 3rd Quarter
  • March 13 –Daylight Savings Time Begins

As mentioned throughout the year,March marks the beginning of when timed multiplication tests may be taken periodically for a grade.  Students have discovered that knowledge and use of these facts is popping up in other math topics.    Please continue to work on these important facts with your child.

 Have a GREAT week!  :)

Friday News - 02/11Friday News –02/11

Students are off to a pretty good start with 2-digit divisors.  We have worked with specific divisors of 36 and 54 and found that the process of long division stays the same even though we now working with larger numbers.  We ended the week  by beginning to work with any 2-digit divisor by using “try-land”.

This week,we will continue to work with these problems as students continue to build their skills and confidence with division.   We will continue to work throughout the week, with a test over long division to be scheduled soon.  Look for more information as the week progresses.

Friday News - 02/04Friday News –02/04

Due to all the snow,we’ll try this again…. :)

Students are getting pretty good with long division.    Ironically, most errors that do occur are due to subtraction.  Please encourage your child to slow down and work carefully to avoid these costly errors.

This week,we will extend our long division skills.  We should be ready on Tuesday to begin working with 2-digit divisors.  This is often a little more difficult for 5th graders.  We will begin by working with specific divisors in which we find all of  multiples of that divisor first, before beginning the division process.  This tends to make the process a little less intimidating as we start out.

Upcoming Events

  • February 10 - Mid-Quarter Progress Reports Home   -updated
  • February 17 – D.A.R.E. Graduation (6:30 p.m.)  -updated
